About Us – Meet the people behind the places

We’re Allan and Annette, a married couple who will never be able to retire because we’ve spent what should have been our savings on travel. We’ve discovered that we don’t want to be hustled on to a coach, bussed to a place, given an hour to look around and then hustled back on a coach. And we’ve discovered that the places we’ve enjoyed most have often been the places that don’t seem to rate a mention in the guide books or the travel websites.

We both have day jobs as broadcast journalists, and through our jobs have travelled to some amazing places – but we’ve been lucky enough to visit all sorts of places under our own steam as well. We’re currently living as permanent residents in our third country, Australia. We were both born in the UK, emigrated to New Zealand (we are NZers) and then to Australia. We live in coastal New South Wales and share our lives with two dopey dogs.

Where did we get our travel bug? Probably as kids. Annette’s favourite teacher at school was Mr McAleen, who instilled in her a love for finding out about new countries and new ways of life. And Allan’s family (left – that’s him sitting on the pebbles somewhere in the mid 1960s) used to go on holiday every year to Pevensey Bay in Sussex, or North Wales. Both perfectly lovely places (and they may feature one day as an Undiscovered Place) but… well, the world is a big place.

So join us and discover some of the world’s less discovered places. As we say, you don’t have to be intrepid – you just need an open mind and an enthusiasm to step away from the tour groups.
